Organismal Ecology
Although it is not a burning subject among environmental enthusiasts, thermal water pollution is a form of pollution that can have far-reaching impacts on the ecosystems of organisms living in aquatic habitats. The release of large quantities of heated water into lakes, rivers and coastal reservoirs changes the water temperature several degrees above the seasonal ambient temperatures; the consequent ecological effects on aquatic organisms are often drastic.
Sources of Thermal Water Pollution
Electric power plants and several energy intensive industries require massive volumes of cooling water for carrying out their heat exchange processes as well as to avoid overheating of certain equipment. In order to meet these requirements, naturally available water in nearby lakes is the most inexpensive choice. Electric generating plants and industries release high-temperature waste water into rivers and lakes, thereby disrupting the natural habitats of aquatic species.
